In January, 79 individual cases of measles were confirmed in 10 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends all children get two doses of MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age.
In a given year, more measles cases can occur for any of the following reasons: an increase in the number of travelers who get measles abroad and bring it into the U.S., or further spread of measles in U.S. communities with pockets of unvaccinated people.
ANA has a long-standing policy supporting immunizations. ANA believes nurses have a professional and ethical obligation to be immunized -- it protects the health of the nurse, patients, and the community. Nurses work in environments where they are exposed to many communicable diseases and infections, so it's especially important to have the following vaccines:
- Seasonal influenza
- Tetanus, diptheria, and pertussis (Tdap)
- Measles, mumps, and rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella

HRSA Grant Opportunity: Advanced Nurse Practitioner Residency

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is accepting applications for the fiscal year 2019 Advanced Nursing Education Nurse Practitioner Residency (ANE-NPR) funding opportunity. The application cycle closes March 4.
The purpose of the ANE-NPR program is to prepare and increase the number of new nurse practitioners (NPs) in primary care practice in community-based settings through clinical- and academic-focused 12-month nurse practitioner residency programs.
Preference will be considered for projects that benefit rural or underserved populations. The HRSA Grant number is HRSA-19-001.

ANA Applauds Introduction of Bipartisan Gun Bill

ANA applauds the introduction of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R. 8) in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation expands current background checks processes to ensure that unlicensed dealers and manufacturers do not sell guns to individuals prohibited from owning firearms.
Nurses represent the frontlines of care during every mass shooting, homicide, suicide, accidental shooting, and other acts of violence, providing direct care at the bedside to victims and their families. As such, nurses have long pushed for action to enhance the background check system to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from obtaining firearms. This bipartisan legislation is a step in the right direction.
