Colorado Nurse Practice Act Under Sunset Review

April 15, 2019

The Colorado Office of Policy, Research and Regulatory Reform is conducting a sunset review of the Board of Nursing.  An analysis in a sunset review is performed to determine whether the regulatory program is necessary and should be continued, modified or eliminated. This review will produce a report with recommendations to the Colorado General Assembly and result in subsequent legislation based on the recommendations in the report. Your input is an important component of a successful sunset review. If you would like to submit comments online, please visit COPRRR's website.

The current Sunset Review of the Nurse Practice Act offer opportunities for important input:

1) Renewing the Nurse Practice Act and State Board of Nursing is essential to assuring a competent nursing workforce in Colorado.  Nursing comprises 80% of the healthcare workforce and spend the greatest amount of time with patients in their role offering informed surveillance, early detection and intervention of complications from medical disease and/or procedures.

2) Modernization of the language in the  Nurse Practice Act at the time of Sunset Review recognizes that health care teams are diverse and are most effective when all providers practice to the full scope of their educational preparation and competence.

3) Nurses daily work is to advocate for consumers/patients, families, communities and populations, in both autonomous and collaborative care models.

Take time to let the  COPRRR's website know the importance of their review.
