Consent to Serve Received and ANA/CNA Membership Confirmed

Professional Education:
MSN, MBA, RN

Current positions held & employer information:
CNA Board Member representing Region 3/DNA 4;

Co-Chair of GAPP (Government and Public Policy) Committee;

Have been active with CNA & GAPP and worked closely with the leadership of both these entities. I taught Change Theory at the ADN and BSN levels during my years as nursing faculty, and though we adhere strictly to the by-laws of both CNA and GAPP we maintain the level of fluidity that allows us to function through and accommodate change.

ANA/CNA experience (current & past):
Appointed to CNA Board in May 2020 and elected Co-Chair of GAPP that same year. Active and a member of ANA/CNA since 2006 and a member of ANA prior to that, serving briefly as Secretary of MNSA while in my senior year of the nursing program at St. Olaf College.

Please describe experience with governance, management, public speaking, and/or financial management.
I served as coordinator and faculty of the RN to BSN Program at Pueblo Community College from 2019-2022, at which time I retired from teaching. As cited above, I have been a Board Member of CNA and have worked closely with GAPP as Co-Chair. I count public speaking as one of my strengths. Prior to my career in nursing academics I lived and worked overseas for 22 years in five countries, during which time I was able to employ the management skills afforded me by my MBA studies in the fields of medical and pharmaceutical marketing and sales.

1) Please describe what members should know about why you seek being elected to this office or position?
I have been an RN since 1977 and have always worked faithfully to elevate the profile of the nursing profession and to protect the rights and safety of my nursing colleagues. I look forward to continuing to serve CNA and the Board in the most useful way possible. I believe I can fulfill the position of President Elect successfully with the advice and mentorship of our current President.

2) What priorities do you see for CNA at this time?
CNA remains the most effective collective voice for nurses in Colorado. I have always encouraged my students to join a professional organization to maximize their ability to effect change, and in leading by example have been gratified when they choose CNA. For the first time in my 45 year career as an RN I am seeing acknowledgement of the professional status of the nursing profession, especially with the passage of HB22-1401 this past May. But it has taken the hard work of many people to get this far, and I do not want us to lose our momentum as COVID becomes a less evocative catalyst. Nurses must meet regularly and define our voice as we advocate for the best possible outcomes in health care. And we must work hard to educate our legislators about who we are and what we do.

3) As a potential member of the CNA Board of Directors you have a Duty of Loyalty to CNA. That Duty of Loyalty is defined as being able to put the interests of CNA above any others. Please indicate if you have a real or potential Conflict of Interest personally or financially that may impact your ability to vote on select CNA business.

I have no conflict of interest.

Professional Education
BSN, enrolled in MSN program

Current position held and experiences with change leadership.
I am currently a Nurse Manager for an acute care unit at an academic medical center. In my nearly 8 years at that organization, I have participated and led projects to reduce length of stay in pancreas surgery patients and assisted with the introduction external urinary catheter alternatives to reduce use of indwelling urinary catheters and risk for CAUTI in the inpatient setting. I additionally serve as a mentor, preceptor, hospital supervisor, and co-chair of a CAUTI prevention committee. I worked both as a charge nurse and hospital supervisor during the COVID responses of the last few years, helping to create processes to help kept staff and patients safe. I have led a transition space for inpatient care, working with my staff to create workflows that allow for compassionate care in non traditional inpatient care settings, support capacity and throughput, and maximize resources through the use of creative staffing models.

ANA/CNA experience (current & past)
I have been a member of the ANA since first becoming a nursing student. Before nursing, I participated in undergraduate research opportunities in French language and culture and Chemistry Education, so I understand the importance of having a community of people within the field who work toward common goals.

Please describe experience with governance, management, public speaking, and/or financial management.
I currently lead a 36 bed surgical unit at an academic medical center. Our population is diverse, seeing patients of high acuity in various populations, such as trauma, urology, and general/endocrine/breast/bariatric/gender affirmation surgery. I have participated on committees and workgroups up through a system level, taking the lead on projects related to new construction, workplace violence prevention, and CAUTI prevention. Throughout my life, I have had a number of roles requiring public speaking and financial management such as Associate Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager and have presented podium and poster presentations at local and national conferences including the Rocky Mountain Research and EBP Symposium, the American Chemical Society Annual Meeting, and the AMSN national convention.

1) Please describe what members should know about why you seek being elected to this office or position?
I am a person first and a nurse second. I am seeking a position on the board that would allow me to both connect with nurses and patients in a variety of practice settings and throughout the state of Colorado so that I may work to change nursing for the compassionate care of nurses AND patients. Before the pandemic began, we were already working on helping each other battle through compassion fatigue, moral distress, and burnout. The pandemic surges have highlighted that we need to do more to strengthen and protect nurses by working toward top of scope practice and allowing nurses to truly care for people.

2) What priorities do you see for CNA at this time?
The CNA has a duty to inform, empower and advocate for nurses. I believe there is great work being done in the state of Colorado to maintain nurse safety and creatively manage staffing by highlighting nurses practicing at top of scope during the nursing shortage. I feel the CNA Shane unique opportunity to help reconnect nurses to the communities they serve in, strengthening trust and respect in the nursing profession.

I do not have any disclosures at this time that present a conflict of interest personally or professionally. I am committed to the interests of the CNA.

Medical Director women veterans program, family nurse practitioner primary care. 2018 to present. Working in the federal government allows for change daily. As one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States, process change is always being analyzed for outcome measures. Annually new outcome measures are identified;  these measures are calculated and compared to state, regional, and  national outcome measures. My role is medical director is to assure these measures are being met And or succeed  state and national levels. Measurements such as timely access to care, completion of annual mammograms, completion of screening Pap smears, blood pressure management with blood pressure is at Standardized set goals and that blood sugars, weight, pain levels, and safety goals are met for each patient.  As a nurse practitioner I manage a set panel of patients, assuring that these goals are met for each individual patient on my panel.

ANA/CNA experience (current & past)
I have been a member of ANA and CNA for 30 out of the 42 years of professional nursing that I have completed. Times that I was not a member including going back to school which accounted for 14 of the years. I have served in leader ship roles at the local level of CNA, hosted events to increase membership through Colorado Mesa University and Sigma Theta Tau competition events. I was a Director for six years for the Colorado nurses association serving as Director at large for two years and Director of region five for two years. In 2020 I took over the role of Director of region five as the Director left the state for a new career. This year I’d like to run for that position as Director of region five and continue the work supporting nurses in rural western Colorado.

I was able to present to legislators about the scope of practice of nurse practitioners with a successful part of reducing the hours needed for independent practice in Colorado.

I was a grass roots liaison for several years between Colorado Mesa University and AACN discussing policy and education in 2012- 2016.

Please describe experience with governance, management, public speaking, and/or financial management.
Throughout my career my leader ship has served in many roles. Shared governance in my early years as a neonatal nurse practitioner, leader ship role changing the structure and roles of school nursing in a large school district that span two years in the redesign of their nursing services. As a family nurse practitioner, management of a panel of patients and working through informal leadership to educate nurses in primary care practices. I was a national speaker for HANDS: an eight hour workshop dedicated to presentations  on helping  to meet the needs of students with diabetes in schools.

As Director of Health Sciences at Colorado Mesa University, I was instrumental in working through 14 programs  to prepare and pass  accreditation at the national level. Working with faculty, students, and governance boards each accreditation was successful for maximum amount of time. I have publicly spoken in many pinning ceremony‘s, nursing graduation ceremonies and giving presentations on Medical issues that affect our community.

1) Please describe what members should know about why you seek being elected to this office or position?
Access to care in rural areas can be impacted by poor roads, mountain passes, weather and poverty. Many families living in a rural areas, live in poverty, They have  unreliable transportation and face long wait times  to gain access to medical care. Short staffing is as common issue in rural Colorado as it is in larger metropolitan cities. However the workforce is the same in these rule towns  and often nurses work at two or three different places due to limited staffing. Well travelers nurses do help, the infrastructure is limited and needs supported and increased to keep nurses in small communities.. Supporting the short staffing with safe staffing ratios, and expanding nursing roles to help with the burden of acute and chronic illness, our goals that I wish to keep very visible in western Colorado.

Supporting nurses to advance their education while staying in their communities is valued.

2) What priorities do you see for CNA at this time?

  1. Balancing the work force and supporting Registered Nurses to work at the highest level of practice. This means RNs are working in areas where their critical thinking is needed the most.
  2. Adequate staffing ratios for safety of patients  in all settings.
  3. Continue to keep the workplace safe and free from harassment, abuse and harm.
  4. Supporting ANAs social justice policy
  5. Developing a higher profile of Colorado nurses association in rural  areas and on the Western Slope, while increasing awareness of the organization and the benefits for all nurses in Colorado.

I have no potential conflicts of interest personally or financially that impact my ability to serve the CNA Organization. Serving is an educator for half of my career ANA guides education, curriculum, and behaviors of nursing students and faculty. Educating novice nursing students, the standards and social policy guides have been instrumental in writing curriculum and professional statements in nursing education. The code of ethics guides  conduct in primary care, in caring for patients in all settings and as a professional gives voice to the importance of respect, diversity, equality in nursing.

Professional Education
MBAHA - CU Denver, 2014; BSN - UCCS, 2006; BA Classics - Colorado College, 1990

Current position held and experiences with change leadership.
Clinical Director of Capacity Management; UCHealth South Region

I have worked over 15 years as a bedside nurse and nurse leader.  As a bedside critical care nurse, the nature of delivering that level of patient care is change and being able to rapidly respond to the patient's condition.  This continues to hold true as I have moved into management and leadership throughout my career.  Healthcare, by its nature, is constantly in flux, and we as leaders must be adaptable and flexible in order to respond to the needs of our patients and colleagues at any given moment.  My most recent experience with COVID highlights this - ranging from standing up virtual ambulatory clinic visits in less than a week to launching the South Region COVID Vaccine Clinics, and now serving as Director for Capacity Management for the South Region.

How we manage change is our challenge as leaders - addressing and answering the question "Why", and connecting the dots for our teams to overcome the fear of the unknown.  This is what allows us to move forward in a proactive manner which is what is needed for our profession to move forward and thrive.

ANA/CNA experience (current & past)
Previous (and now current) member of ANA/CNA

Please describe experience with governance, management, public speaking, and/or financial management.
I have been in the business environment for over 30 years.  First as a Marketing/Communications Director for non-profit arts organizations, second as a nurse, nurse manager, and nurse director for UCHealth.  I have managed budgets throughout my professional career, and am familiar with traditional media outlets (TV, radio, print) as I worked with them extensively in the first half of my career.

As a nurse and nurse leader, I have continued to fine tune my financial management and healthcare leadership skills.  As a bedside nurse, I was the chair of our Unit Practice Council and System Practice Council.  I participated in our system redesign of Shared Governance in 2007-2010.  As a bedside clinician, I addressed the City Council of Colorado Springs regarding the ownership of Memorial Hospital.  As a result, I was selected to serve on the City Council Task Force responsible for recommending ownership for the Memorial Hospital Health System.  This resulted in an unanimous recommendation for UCHealth to assume ownership and subsequent City wide election with overwhelming support to move to UCHealth.

1) Please describe what members should know about why you seek being elected to this office or position?
We need to redefine nursing as we move into the future.  The state of Colorado continues to experience a substantial deficit of nurses all the while the state continues to grow and expand.  We need to seek creative and safe alternatives to protect our nurses (and patients) while pursuing models of care that redefine our profession and utilizes our skills at the top of our scope.  Continuing to reinforce the professionalism of our career field, and expanding opportunities for individuals to pursue nursing as a life long career is of state-wide and national importance.  We need to recognize that burn-out is real, and that support is needed to care for our own, while we care for others.

2) What priorities do you see for CNA at this time?

  1. Address work place violence for all members of the healthcare team.
  2. Pursue equity of care for non and underinsured patients in the state of Colorado.
  3. Improve Colorado's resources for behavioral health clinicians and facilities.
  4. Increase access to long-term care facilities for patients in need of skilled or long term care freeing up beds for the acutely sick/injured patients.

I have no conflicts of interest.

I am new to the Colorado Nurses Association. I appreciate the collaborative efforts to advance the profession of nursing, support the nurses within the profession and ultimately to improve health for all.

2) What priorities do you see for CNA at this time?
Advocating for the nurse. In the current healthcare climate, and with the shortage of nurses, we need to advocate for the front-line nurse.
